Naomh Barróg 2-07 Naomh Olafs 1-10

League: AFL3
Location: Pairc Barróg
Date: 24-February-2013
Time: 11AM

A hard fought draw was on show in Pairc Barróg in front of a decent crowd due to the Junior A's match being called off earlier in the morning. The Barróg line out had two players out of minor, Niall Connolly and Ciaran Gallagher, making their first league start for the top Barróg team. Olafs took the upper hand with 2 early points, one from a free and one from play. They extended their lead with a suspicious goal. Barry Hehir seemed to be taken out by a third man tackle, leaving his man free who crossed the ball in to an oncoming forward who palmed the ball into the back of the net. 1-2 down 5 minutes into the first half and it seemed like a heavy defeat was on the cards. Barróg fought back with 2 fine points from Richie and Paraic. Moments latter Richie got hold of the ball 10 yards out and buried it to the upper right corner leaving the keeper no chance of saving it. The teams exchanged points including a point from David McCormack. A scramble deep in Olaf's defence saw the ball land in the hands of Paraic Whelan who kicked the ball through a melee of players to once again rattle the net. Barróg on top now and looking to kick on but play needed to be stopped as there was an Olaf's man down. Ambulance called and then cancelled after the injury seemed to be less serious than first expected. This delay of over 5 minutes gave the Olafs players time to recoup and stopped the momentum of the Barróg team. Olafs came back with a point that Niall Connolly had to touch over the crossbar to prevent a goal. Half time came and Barróg had a 1 point lead. Olafs took the first point of the second half to put the teams level. Niall Carey and Anthony Brady replaced David McCormack and Colin McDonnell. The second half was filled with Barróg wides. Late in the second half Evin Scanlan won the ball on the 45 and took off. He looked up to see if there was a pass on but there was no one free. He decided to take the shot on himself from a tight angle and the ball squeezed through the posts to put Barróg up a point going into injury time. Unfortunately the game wasn't done. The Olafs forwards were reluctant to take several opportunities to take a shot at point or goal due to the solid full back line. Couldn't hold out forever and the ball was eventually put over the bar. Kick out, won a free, whistle blown for full time. A draw was a fair result but the Barróg team seemed the more disappointed walking off the field. Good luck to Patsie on his first campaign as Intermediate manager.
